Recognizing the Forms of Sexual Harassment & Protecting Victims

Sexual harassment can take many forms, some more visible than others. It ranges from obvious acts like inappropriate touching or explicit comments to more subtle behaviours such as suggestive looks or unwelcome advances.

Even seemingly harmless remarks or jokes about someone’s appearance or personal life can create a hostile environment. Recognizing these different forms of behaviour is important to effectively eliminate and prevent sexual harassment.

Forms of Sexual Harassment: What It Looks Like

Sexual harassment can happen in different ways, including sexual innuendos, inappropriate jokes or crude comments, and the display or sharing of sexually explicit photos, cartoons, or written content that can be viewed by the victim or others. These behaviours often leave the victim feeling embarrassed, uncomfortable, and even unsafe due to the impact of such words or actions.

The consequences of such actions are significant, as they can create a hostile and uncomfortable environment. This, in turn, can deeply affect the victim’s emotional well-being and sense of security, leaving a lasting impact on their mental and physical health.

How Sexual Harassment Damages Emotional Health and Well-Being

Sexual harassment, whether through inappropriate comments, jokes, or actions, is a tool used by perpetrators to assert control and influence over their victims. This behaviour often leaves victims feeling uncomfortable, embarrassed, and even fearful, significantly damaging their emotional well-being and impacting their future choices.

Sexual harassment can manifest through remarks or “jokes” about a person’s body, clothing, or sexual orientation. Perpetrators often use these behaviours to impose judgment and assert control over their victims, potentially attempting to influence their social, career, or educational paths and decisions.

These comments or “jokes” may escalate to unwelcome touching (sexual assault) and can leave the victim feeling uncomfortable, “icky”, or even unsafe.

The victim may feel they are being singled out, embarrassed and humiliated. The impact of such harmful comments can lead to negative self-perception, damaging emotional health and well-being, and influencing future decisions about their identity and life choices.

Sexual Harassment: Legal and Institutional Responsibilities

Sexual harassment has no place in public, educational or work environments. Legal frameworks exist to ensure that all individuals are protected and can engage in safe, respectful environments. These laws emphasize the importance of consent and respect in all interactions and environments.

Workplaces and educational institutions have a responsibility to ensure that their environments are safe and respectful for everyone. Management must ensure that the people who populate those spaces are all committed to being appropriate and respectful with how they speak and interact with others.

Everyone deserves to live and work in safe and respectful environments.
