What is a Power of Attorney?

“Power of attorney” is the name of a legal document that gives another person power to take care of your financial and legal matters, like your banking and paying your bills.

A person with power of attorney can make decisions in your name, sign documents, and overall act on your behalf, so it is important to consult with a lawyer if you are considering granting it to someone – even if they are family – to make sure your interests are going to be protected.

Why grant it?

There can be numerous reasons why someone can make a power of attorney. One example is if you are going to be travelling, or relocating to a different country, and need someone to take care of your financial needs when you are gone. Another reason can be planning in advance, to ensure that your financial matters are taken care of if you suffer from an illness.
